'I compared Cadbury Mini Eggs to Aldi ones and the result knocked my socks off'

Easter is almost here, and shops and supermarkets across the nation have ensured aisles are brimming with themed sweet treats, chocolate and confectionery products. Each year, Cadbury classics like the Creme Egg and Mini Eggs make an eagerly awaited comeback to shops, while various retailers launch comparable versions of these products, often at a cheaper price.

This seems to be the case with Aldi's Choceur Mini Eggs, which even come in a similar yellow packaging to the original Cadbury Mini Eggs but for slightly less cash.

But how do they hold up against the original? Food influencer Becca Stock – known on TikTok as Becca Eats Everything – was keen to get the answer.

She purchased a 256g bag of Cadbury Mini Eggs from Tesco but was baffled that they cost £5 even while on offer – online, they're priced at £6.20. She then snapped up Aldi's alternative, which comes in a 256g bag for £3.99.

Taste test

The 29-year-old influencer, who's accumulated more than half a million followers on the popular social media platform, sampled the originals first. She found the shell was softer than expected, lacking the distinctive "crunch".

Aldi's Mini Chocolate Eggs delivered the goods though, as Becca noted they were crunchier. Despite the chocolate filling not being as creamy as Cadbury's eggs, she still favoured Aldi's centre.

She's now switched allegiance and will opt for the more Aldi's alternative instead of purchasing Cadbury's original product. Becca, from Gloucester, Gloucestershire, said: "They [Mini Eggs] are probably my favourite Cadbury's product, with Creme Eggs being a close second.

"I was in Tesco and I was going to pick up a bag and I couldn't believe it was nearly £5 for what was a standard size bag, on offer as well."

She continued: "I thought, there's got to be a better option. I bought them and we had them and the shell had changed, it was soft and didn't have the usual crunch.

"That's what made me want to try others, these are now not as good and they've increased the price massively. The two bags we had were both soft - different to last year.

"The ones from Aldi were £3.99 for the same weight. They were all-round better, the shell was crunchy like you'd expect and thicker, the chocolate was just as good. It wasn't as creamy as Cadbury's but I actually preferred it. I would opt for the Aldi ones instead of the Cadbury ones."

Reaction

Becca uploaded a video comparing the chocolate treats on TikTok on February 10 and, to date, it has amassed more than 720,000 views.

She said: "If these [Aldi's mini chocolate eggs] were put in a bowl and I didn't see the branding, I would have a hard time knowing these weren't Cadbury.

"The shell is great, the chocolate inside is okay, it's not Cadbury's, but I don't think Cadbury have been the same for the past 10 years. The chocolate inside is really good, it's nice and sweet and milky."

When Becca sampled the Cadbury originals after Aldi's version, she felt they were "almost stale" in flavour. She said: "The shell, it's got no crunch to it, it's almost stale."

Becca added: "Aldi, you're knocking the socks off me. I'm giving these a nine out of ten."

Tesco confirmed Cadbury Mini Eggs 256g are currently on offer with the Tesco Clubcard for £5 and claimed this is comparable to what other retailers charge for the branded product.

Julie Ashfield, chief commercial officer at Aldi UK, said: "With Easter fast approaching, our customers want chocolate that delivers on both taste and value, and our Choceur Mini Chocolate Eggs does just that. We've loved seeing the buzz on social with shoppers praising our eggs."

Cadbury has been approached for comment.
