Dakshina Kannada MP Brijesh Chowta has urged the Central government to take urgent measures to address increasing coastal erosion in the district, particularly in areas such as Ullal and Someshwar.
Raising the issue in the Lok Sabha under Rule 377, Chowta said around 48.40% of the coastline in Dakshina Kannada district is affected by erosion, which is significantly higher than the Karnataka state average of 24% and the national average of 33.6%.
He noted that only 21.9% of the district’s coastline currently remains safe, which is comparatively lower than neighbouring districts.
Chowta urged the Centre to take urgent precautionary measures before the monsoon and formulate a special coastal protection project for Dakshina Kannada. He also called for immediate release of funds to address the issue.
The MP stressed that permanent solutions must be implemented to control coastal erosion and protect the livelihoods of fishermen in the region.
