Does your household include elderly members—or others—who are less familiar with smartphone technology and frequently fall victim to scam calls? You no longer need to worry. Truecaller, the caller identification app, has launched a new feature designed to play a pivotal role in protecting such family members—those who are not particularly tech-savvy—from online and phone call fraud. Let's explore what this new feature entails and how it can prove beneficial for you.
How Does This Feature Work?
With the help of this feature, you can create a "Safety Group" comprising your family or friends. Any member of the household who possesses a strong understanding of smartphones and technology can serve as the group's administrator (Admin) and add up to five other members to the group. Once the group is established, whenever a member receives a suspicious or scam call, an immediate alert is sent to the Admin's phone. Upon receiving this alert, if the Admin suspects that the caller might be a fraudster, they can remotely disconnect the call directly from their own device. However, it is important to note that the ability to remotely disconnect calls is currently available exclusively to Android users, whereas alerts regarding fraudulent calls will be received on both Android and iOS devices.
Other Key Highlights of This Feature
The best aspect of this feature is that you do not need to subscribe to any paid or premium Truecaller plan to use it; it is 100% free. For Android users, the Admin also gains visibility into the real-time status of the group members' phones—such as whether the phone is on silent mode, the current battery level, or if a member is currently walking or driving. This information allows you to call them at the most appropriate and safe time. Additionally, the Admin is empowered to block any suspicious numbers or international calling codes, and the resulting blocklist can be shared across the entire group. Despite the abundance of settings, every member's privacy will remain completely secure, as Truecaller has explicitly clarified that administrators will have absolutely no permission to view any member's standard call or SMS history.
AI to Put an End to Scammers
Truecaller is also working on an AI system capable of detecting specific keywords used by scammers during live calls. If words commonly associated with scams—such as "digital arrest"—are spoken during a call, the system will sense the threat and automatically disconnect the call.
Why Was This Feature Needed?
The problem of scam calls has become a massive issue in India. According to Truecaller's data, the company identified over 7.7 billion (770 crore) fraudulent calls last year. While the government is attempting to curb this issue through regulations such as SIM binding, this new feature places control directly in the hands of the general public. It is currently being rolled out globally (including in India), following successful testing in countries such as Sweden and Malaysia.
What Challenges Does Truecaller Face?
While this new feature may be excellent for users, from a business perspective, Truecaller is currently navigating a rather difficult phase. According to the Q4 2025 report, the company has witnessed a massive decline of 49% in profits and 31% in advertising revenue. Furthermore, its share price has plummeted by 80% over the past year. In addition to these financial hurdles, the company faces stiff competition following the implementation of the government-backed Caller Name Presentation (CNAP) system in India, which displays the caller's real name. Nevertheless, despite these challenges, Truecaller remains confident that its community-based spam reporting system positions it far ahead of features that merely display a caller's name.
