During a two-day visit to Assam, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced a significant investment of ₹2,092 crore aimed at enhancing the state's healthcare system. The initiative is designed to position Assam as the 'Healthcare Hub' of Northeast India. Shah inaugurated the newly constructed Pragjyotishpur Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) in Guwahati, which has been developed at a cost of ₹675 crore. This facility is equipped with state-of-the-art medical amenities and is expected to become a key center for medical education for local students in the future. Each of these centers has been established with an investment of ₹135 crore.
Additionally, he laid the foundation stones for super-specialty hospitals at the Dibrugarh Medical College and Hospital (₹220 crore), Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (₹310 crore), and Barpeta Medical College and Hospital (₹284 crore) through an online ceremony. Shah also initiated the construction of a health building in Guwahati, costing ₹218 crore, and the Abhayapuri District Hospital, which will require ₹115 crore. His visit to Assam began on Saturday evening, marking his fourth trip to the northeastern state in just four months.
Political Significance of the Visit
This visit by Amit Shah holds considerable political weight, especially with upcoming assembly elections in Assam. The frequency of his trips underscores the government's commitment to development, with this being his fourth visit in four months. A key objective of this trip is to communicate the development initiatives undertaken by the 'Double Engine' government, which comprises both the central and state administrations, to the public.
