Mangaluru: In a country like India, which embodies unity in diversity, no language should be allowed to go extinct. Recognizing this, academies are being given prominence to build an active and creative society, said District In-charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao.

He was speaking as the chief guest at the honorary award presentation, book release, and musical instrument distribution ceremony organized by the Department of Kannada and Culture and the Karnataka Arebhashe Culture and Literature Academy at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Bhavan on Saturday, March 14. He noted that Arebhashe is a blend of several languages, potentially influenced by Kannada, Tulu, and Kodava. While primarily spoken by the Vokkaliga community, it is used by others as well. He emphasized that academies were established with the noble intention of breathing life into and preserving languages spoken by smaller populations.

Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, U.T. Khader, who was also a chief guest, stated that the youth must be committed to protecting languages by connecting social, educational, and literary fields. He remarked that while many nations lead in modernity and technology, they cannot surpass the coastal region in linguistic growth. He urged the youth to focus on reading newspapers and books.

Presiding over the event, Sadananda Mavaji, Chairman of the Karnataka Arebhashe Culture and Literature Academy, mentioned that there are over 5 lakh Arebhashe speakers across Dakshina Kannada, Sullia, Puttur, Kodagu, and Hosadurga in Kerala, with a total population of 10 lakh. He highlighted the unique contribution of Arebhashe speakers in the struggle against the British.

Legislative Council member Ivan D'Souza, various board chairpersons including M.A. Gafoor, T.M. Shahid Tekkil, Shalet Lavina Pinto, Mamata D.S. Gatti, District Guarantee Implementation Committee President Bharath Mundodi, and others were present. Former Lions Governor of Sullia, M.B. Sadashiva, delivered the felicitation speech. Chandrashekhar Peralu welcomed the gathering. A total of 11 books were released by the academy.
