What is the purpose of the GATE examination?
GATE scores are utilized for admission into higher education programs—such as M.Tech, M.E., and Ph.D.—at the country's prestigious IITs, NITs, and other premier institutions. Additionally, a monthly stipend is provided to students during their course of study.
Jobs through GATE Scores
The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is considered a crucial examination not only for higher education but also for securing government jobs. Every year, numerous major Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) utilize GATE scores to recruit engineers. Candidates with a strong rank and score may receive job offers based directly on interviews or group discussions, without the need to appear for a separate written examination.
Many of India's leading government companies—such as ONGC, NTPC, BHEL, GAIL, IOCL, HPCL, BPCL, SAIL, Power Grid, Coal India, and DRDO—periodically conduct recruitment drives based on GATE scores. Selection for positions such as Engineer Trainee, Graduate Engineer Trainee (GET), and Management Trainee is conducted within these companies.
For instance, NTPC and the Power Grid Corporation recruit a large number of engineers annually based on their GATE scores. Similarly, companies in the oil and gas sector—such as ONGC, IOCL, and GAIL—also shortlist candidates through GATE. The selection process typically involves an interview or a group discussion following the assessment of the GATE score.
Apart from PSUs, numerous government institutions and research organizations also accord significance to GATE scores. Institutions such as DRDO, ISRO, and BARC also prioritize GATE scores for certain positions.
