Whenever there is talk of successful captains in the Indian Premier League (IPL), the names of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, Gautam Gambhir and Shreyas Iyer come first. Dhoni-Rohit won 5-5 IPL titles as captains, while Gambhir made Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) champion twice under his captaincy. Shreyas Iyer has also made KKR champion as captain.
Shreyas has also taken Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings to the IPL final under his captaincy. He has captained in only 87 matches and his achievements are no less than Dhoni-Rohit. Whereas veteran batsman Virat Kohli, despite captaining Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in more than 140 matches, could not make this team champion even once, for which he keeps getting criticized. However, there is such a record in Kohli’s name as captain that it is not possible for anyone to even come close to it.
Which record is registered in the name of Kohli?
Virat Kohli has led RCB in 143 IPL matches. Out of these, he was able to lead the team to victory only in 66 matches, while RCB had to face defeat in 70 matches. That means Kohli’s win percentage as captain in IPL was below 50, which is considered bad. However, during this period he scored a lot of runs with the bat. While being the captain, he has scored 4994 runs in 142 innings. This is the highest number of runs scored by any captain in IPL.
In this matter, Mahendra Singh Dhoni is at second place, who has scored 4753 runs in 204 innings as captain. Rohit Sharma is at third place with 3986 runs in 157 innings. Dhoni-Rohit have left the captaincy and their career in IPL is also at the last stage. In such a situation, it seems impossible to break Kohli’s record. If we talk about the players who are currently captaining, Shreyas Iyer (2598) and Rishabh Pant (1474) are far away.
