South Western Railway has postponed its recruitment examination following protests by pro-Kannada organizations. The protests stem from the decision to conduct the recruitment examination exclusively in English and Hindi; the step to postpone the exam was taken in response to this opposition. An official from South Western Railway stated, "Due to the protests, the recruitment examinations have been deferred, and the revised dates will be announced later." The morning session of the examinations was postponed after members of pro-Kannada organizations staged protests near examination centers in various parts of the state, including Bengaluru. The official added that the examinations scheduled for the afternoon session have also been postponed.
Exam Scheduled for 295 Posts
On Tuesday, South Western Railway (SWR) had scheduled promotional examinations to fill 295 vacancies, including 194 posts for Goods Train Managers. Members of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike gathered outside examination centers in Bengaluru and Hubballi, demanding that the examinations be conducted in Kannada as well.
The Karnataka Rakshana Vedike is opposing the move to exclude the local language from the recruitment examination, arguing that this would prevent local candidates from participating. While welcoming the decision to postpone the examination, the organization issued a warning that it would resume protests if the exams were rescheduled without its demands being met.
"The Language of Every State Must Be Respected"
Hanumanthappa Ambigere, a member of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, stated, "The language of every state must be respected. Candidates should be permitted to take examinations in their respective state languages—Kannada in Karnataka, Tamil in Tamil Nadu, Marathi in Maharashtra—so that local candidates have better opportunities to secure positions of higher responsibility."
