The Railways has revised its ticket cancellation rules. Cancelling a ticket will now have a financial impact on passengers. Adopting a stricter stance, the Railways has modified the regulations regarding confirmed tickets. Now, the amount deducted—and consequently, the refund received—will depend entirely on *when* you choose to cancel your ticket. Under the new rules, a tiered system of refund rates and penalties has been established. As the train's scheduled departure time draws closer, these regulations will become progressively stricter. This will inevitably impact the pockets of travelers. The Railways plans to implement these new rules in a phased manner between April 1 and April 15, 2026.

The Railways have tightened their regulations regarding confirmed tickets. Now, the deductions and refunds will be determined based on the specific timing of the ticket cancellation. According to the new Railway rules, cancelling a ticket more than 72 hours before departure will yield the maximum refund, with only a nominal minimum processing fee being deducted. However, if a ticket is cancelled between 72 and 24 hours before departure, approximately 25% of the fare amount will be deducted. In addition to this percentage-based deduction, the prescribed minimum cancellation fee will also apply.

If a ticket is cancelled within the window of 24 to 8 hours before departure, the deduction amount will increase to 50% of the fare. If less than 8 hours remain before departure, or if the train has already departed, no refund will be granted. The procedure for filing a TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) may differ.

When will a refund *not* be issued?
If a ticket is cancelled between 24 and 8 hours before the train's scheduled departure, 50% of the fare amount will be deducted. If a ticket is cancelled less than 8 hours before the train's departure, no refund will be provided. Previously, the rule stipulated that no refund would be granted if a ticket was cancelled within 4 hours of the train's departure; now, under the revised regulations, no refund will be issued if the ticket is cancelled within 8 hours of departure.
