Jewar Airport: What is so special about Jewar Airport that will make it the country's most high-tech airport?

For the residents of Delhi-NCR and Uttar Pradesh, today marks the beginning of a new chapter in the aviation sector. The moment that has been awaited for so long has finally arrived. Today, March 28, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the first phase of the Noida International Airport (Jewar Airport)—the country's largest greenfield aviation hub—currently under construction in Gautam Buddha Nagar. Following IGI Delhi and Hindon in Ghaziabad, this will be the third airport in the entire region. This will directly benefit the millions of ordinary travelers who frequently face heavy crowds and traffic congestion at Delhi Airport. This airport has been assigned the identifiers DXN (IATA code) and VIND (ICAO code).

Travel to Become Easier for Millions of Passengers
In its initial phase, this airport will be fully capable of handling an annual passenger volume of 12 million (12 million passengers per annum). Under the first phase, flight operations will commence using a single runway, facilitating approximately 150 take-offs and landings daily. However, the vision behind this project is far-reaching. In the coming years, it will undergo expansion across a total of four distinct phases. According to the master plan, its capacity will be gradually scaled up to accommodate 70 million passengers; by the year 2050, the airport is projected to handle the movement of over 150 million passengers with remarkable ease.

**World-Class Facilities Await
Spanning a vast area of approximately 4,700 hectares, this airport is expected to take until 2040–2050 to reach full development. The estimated cost for the entire project stands at ₹29,000 crore. To bring just the first phase to fruition, an investment of approximately ₹10,000 crore has already been made, of which ₹4,588 crore was spent solely on land acquisition. The first phase features a modern 3,900-meter-long runway, a state-of-the-art Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower, and Terminal-1. For the convenience of passengers, Terminal 1 has been equipped with a state-of-the-art baggage handling system and 10 aerobridges. Security responsibilities here will be entrusted to the CISF. This runway is also suitable for wide-body (large-sized) aircraft.

In the upcoming phases, as construction progresses, the number of runways will increase from one to six, and the number of terminals will reach four. In the future, a major cargo terminal, an Aircraft Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility, and a logistics hub will also be established here. This airport operates on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, under which it will be operated by Zurich Airport AG for the next 40 years. The objective is to develop it into an eco-friendly airport with 'Net-Zero Emissions.'

No More Traffic Woes
Often, passengers' biggest concern is getting from their homes to the airport. This aspect has been given special attention in the design of Jewar Airport. A grand 'Ground Transport Center' has been constructed here, spanning 20 acres. The airport is directly connected to the Yamuna Expressway, National Highway-44 (NH-44), and the Jewar-Faridabad Expressway.

Excellent bus and taxi services will be available for travelers arriving from Delhi, Agra, and other cities across the NCR. Plans include integrating the airport with the Delhi Metro and Rapid Rail (RRTS) networks, thereby reducing travel times—which currently take hours—to a mere fraction of that duration. Following today's inauguration, commercial flight operations for the general public will officially commence as soon as the final clearance is received from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

What facilities will be available at Jewar Airport?
No-Queue Check-in: Features include self-baggage drop facilities and 'DigiYatra' (facial recognition scanning), eliminating the need to stand in queues.

Sleep Pods: Compact cabins equipped with air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and charging ports, available for rent at rates ranging from ₹500 to ₹800 per hour. Free Relaxation Zone: A complimentary, natural open area shaded by trees—perfect for unwinding.

Pod Taxis and Nearby Parking: Parking facilities located just a 5-minute walk from the terminal, along with India’s first ‘Pod Taxi’ service.

Affordable Food Court (Eatery Section): Food options from Haldiram’s, Bikanervala, and local vendors available for just ₹100–₹200.

5G Network and Smart Charging: The entire airport will be a high-speed 5G zone, with universal charging points and USB Type-C ports available right next to every other seat.
