For the likes of Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli, IPL 2026 is the 19th season as they all began their journey in the 1st edition back in 2008. Kohli was not even an India player back then while Rohit was still a newcomer in the side. Dhoni was the captain of two out of three international formats and had not long back won the 1st-ever T20 World Cup. Fast forward to 2026, Dhoni has been retired from international cricket for some time while Kohli and Rohit play only ODIs for India and are in the twilight of their careers.
MS Dhoni Out for Some TimeHowever, while Rohit and Kohli have begun their 19th season, Dhoni is yet to. In fact, the start is further delayed for ‘Thala’ because he is nursing a calf strain. CSK have officially said he will be out for two weeks but he may not be available until late April. But Dhoni’s misfortune is proving to be Rohit’s opportunity.

Rohit has the chance to break an IPL record that has belonged to Dhoni for some time. The record is for most appearances in IPL history. Dhoni leads the pack at the moment with 278 games. Rohit is in second place with 273. If Rohit plays the next six games and Dhoni does not play any in that period, ‘Hitman’ shall have surpassed ‘Thala’ on the list and taken the No. 1 spot.
Virat Kohli Just Behind Rohit Sharma and MS DhoniDhoni may be able to close the gap once he’s back but Rohit shall have the lead. Kohli is not too far behind with 268 matches under his belt. But it will take time for him to catch up. Of course, there is a chance that he finishes with the most games in the long run. But that is easier said than done and it’s too early to speculate.
Will MS Dhoni Play IPL 2027?Dhoni turns 45 this year and Rohit will be 39. It is not confirmed if this is Dhoni’s last IPL or if he will be back in 2027. Rohit is expected to be back in 2027 as he will look to break more records. IPL 2026 is still in its infancy and there is a long way to go.
Can Rohit Sharma Help MI Win IPL 2026?Rohit’s IPL 2026 started well with a 38-ball 78 vs KKR as MI crushed them by six wickets at home. This ended a 14-year jinx for the five-time champions. MI last won their season opener in 2012. If MI win this year, they will have the record of most IPL titles to themselves. For Rohit, it shall be a double delight if he can break Dhoni’s record and help MI break one as well.
