Bike Parcel by Train: Sending your bike from one city to another has become incredibly easy and affordable, thanks to Indian Railways. What is the correct procedure, and what are the essential rules? Find out here.
Bike Parcel by Train: Whether you are shifting from one city to another or simply want to send your favorite bike ahead for a long-distance trip, private courier companies often present you with hefty bills. In such situations, Indian Railways’ Parcel and Luggage Service proves to be extremely useful, delivering your bike safely to its destination at a very minimal cost. The Railways offers you two excellent options: ‘Luggage’—which applies when you are traveling on the same train yourself— and ‘Parcel’—which applies when you are sending only the bike. This process is not only economical but also highly reliable. With just a little paperwork and proper packaging, you can transport your bike to any corner of the country. Let us walk you through exactly how you can send your bike via the Railways’ parcel service.
First: You Must Book the Service
If you wish to send your bike as a parcel, you must first complete the booking process. Both online and offline options are available for this purpose. Online, you can initiate the booking from the comfort of your home by visiting the Railways’ dedicated parcel portal: www.parcel.indianrail.gov.in. Alternatively, you can visit the parcel office directly at the railway station to complete the formalities. Regardless of which method you choose, you will need to follow a few essential steps:
First, fill out a ‘Forwarding Note’—either via the railway website or at the parcel office—and provide the specific details regarding your bike.
On the online portal, you can view a list of available trains, and the system will also display an estimated freight charge (transportation cost).
At the station, your bike will be weighed; once the final payment—calculated based on the actual weight and distance—is made, you will be issued a ‘Railway Receipt’ (RR).
A major advantage of online booking is the ‘Track and Trace’ feature, which allows you to monitor your bike’s current location; you will also receive an SMS alert once it reaches its destination.
How Much Will It Cost?
Transporting a bike via the railway is significantly more affordable compared to using private companies. For a distance of 500 kilometers, the average fare hovers around ₹1,200; however, this figure may vary slightly depending on the weight of the bike and the specific distance involved.
At the time of booking, ensure you have your bike’s Registration Certificate (RC), insurance policy copy, and your Aadhaar card or Driving License—both the original documents and their photocopies—readily available.
Set aside an additional ₹300 to ₹500 for packing materials, and ensure that the headlight and turn indicators are thoroughly covered to minimize the risk of damage.
The most crucial rule: completely drain the bike’s fuel tank. If petrol is detected during inspection, the railway authorities may impose a fine of ₹1,000.
It is highly advisable to visit the booking office at least one day prior to your intended shipping date to check for slot availability.
