  • About 32 crore pages of about 1 crore answer sheets are being scanned and checked digitally.
  • AI will do the initial assessment, but the teacher will have the authority to give the final marks.
  • This will also change the students’ answer writing style and give priority to to-the-point and keyword-based writing.

CBSE has introduced digital checking i.e. on-screen marking for class 12th exams this year. Under this scheme, teachers are scanning 32 crore pages of around 1 crore answer sheets and checking them on computers. This process is implemented for transparent, quick and accurate evaluation, wherein the answer sheets are saved digitally at the examination center itself. In the next phase, this process will be implemented for class 10th board exams as well.

According to experts, this is a big step towards applying artificial intelligence (AI) in answer sheet checking. This will bring about a major change in the education system. Many education boards have already started preparing to use artificial intelligence in the answer sheet checking process. This can make the answer sheet checking process fully digital and technology-based, which is expected to make the result process faster and more transparent. (Photo Courtesy – AI Created)

The need for teachers will continue

According to education experts, AI will only play a supporting role in assessment. The authority to award final marks will remain with the examiner. In the new system, the answer sheets will be scanned first in the process. AI will do a preliminary assessment. The teacher will check the marks by viewing the answer sheet on the digital screen. The final result will be declared after the approval of the examiner. This means, the machine will set the pace and the teacher will make the final decision.

Answer Sheet in digital format

As per the recent changes of CBSE, the answer sheets of the students are first scanned and converted into digital format. The teacher then gives the marks on the screen. In the next step, the AI software will read the answers and analyze them. This technology will mainly work on three levels.

signature recognition

AI will convert students’ handwriting into text. Modern systems are capable of understanding both Hindi and English languages.

Content analysis

Based on the ideal answer and the established marking scheme, the software will identify important points in the answer sheet, including correct facts, key words, steps or formulas, diagrams or examples. Based on this, the system will suggest primary marks.

Smart marking and moderation

AI can also check whether the answer is relevant to the topic and not just a lengthy text.

Students’ styles will change

According to experts, the new assessment system may also change students’ writing style. This will develop the modern style of writing answers in points, clear headings and sub-headings, keyword-based answers and step-by-step answers. This will eliminate the need for lengthy answers, but prefer accurate and topic-specific answers.

Growing number of testers: a challenge

Checking lakhs of answer sheets every year is a big challenge. The traditional system has faced many problems. Assessment takes a lot of time. Different scoring methods by different examiners raise questions. An AI-based system is considered to be a step towards reducing these problems due to errors in totals or marks that require re-checking.
