Prominent US economists have drawn attention to India’s measured foreign policy and economic resilience in a turbulent international environment – marked by ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and elsewhere.

Economist **Jeffrey Sachs** suggested that India can contribute to reducing the ongoing tension between America-Israel-Iran and bringing stability. In recent interviews, he cited India’s huge population, ancient civilizational heritage and current chairmanship of **BRICS** as forces that position New Delhi to mediate or help defuse crises. Sachs suggested that India should work closely with other BRICS members, including Russia, China and Brazil, to uphold international law, promote cooperation and counter unilateral actions. He said BRICS represents almost half the world’s population and a large share of global GDP, making it a powerful platform for multilateral diplomacy.

Additionally, economist **Steve Hanke** asked Foreign Minister **S. Jaishankar** was praised for his strategic and systematic diplomacy. Hanke shared a post on social media in which he compared the global turmoil — caused by wars, sanctions and uncertainty — to Jaishankar’s calm focus on long-term planning.

Speaking at the 15th annual convocation of IIM Raipur, Jaishankar emphasized that India has successfully faced recent domestic and external pressures. He suggested that countries should adopt the principles of **”hedging, de-risking and diversification”** to manage risks in a rapidly changing global system, where resources and capabilities are often leveraged or weaponized. He underlined India’s social optimism, adaptability and stable economic growth despite global shocks.

Analysts see these comments as recognition of India’s efforts to strengthen its position in a multipolar world through balancing relations with major powers, building alliances and pragmatic diplomacy rather than reactive measures.
