What do the stickers say?

The sticker on fruits and vegetables is called PLU Code (Price Look-Up Code). This is a special number, which tells how the fruit or vegetable has been grown.

Types of PLU codes and their meaning

If there is a 4-digit code on the sticker, it means that the fruit or vegetable has been grown using traditional methods. Chemical fertilizers and pesticides may be used in this.

5 digit code starting with 9 (eg: 94011)

This code indicates that the fruit or vegetable is organic, that is, it has been grown naturally without chemicals. It is considered safer for health.

5 digit code starting with 8 (eg: 84011)

Such a code indicates that the fruit or vegetable is Genetically Modified (GMO), that is, genetic changes have been made in it. However, these days this code is rarely seen.

Are the stickers themselves dangerous?

No, the stickers themselves are not dangerous, but the adhesive used in them can be chemical based. If the fruit is eaten without removing the sticker and washing it, harmful elements can enter the body.

Where is the danger?

The real danger lies not in the stickers, but in: the residues of pesticides, chemical fertilizers, wax coatings that remain on the surface of fruits and vegetables.

How to protect?

Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly before eating. Clean with salt water or baking soda. Always eat after removing the sticker. As far as possible, choose organic fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables with stickers are not dangerous in themselves, but they do indicate how your food was grown. With the right information and a little caution, you can protect your health.
