Friends, on the first day of the special session being held in Parliament, Indian Union Minister Amit Shah has taken over the entire session with his statements. In this session, the Home Minister addressed the Lok Sabha amidst vigorous debate on the Women’s Reservation Bill and the proposed delimitation process. Responding to concerns raised by the opposition, he stressed that no state—especially in South India—will suffer any political loss due to the proposed changes.
1. No lack of representation from the South
Amit Shah firmly assured that the delimitation process will not reduce the political power of the southern states. Instead, the number of Lok Sabha seats in each southern state will increase.
2. Increase in seats in southern states
He made it clear that the seat distribution in the South will increase faster than the national average. Examples of this are as follows:
Telangana: 17 → 26 seats
Karnataka: 28 → 42 seats
Tamil Nadu: 39 → 59 seats
Andhra Pradesh: 25 → 38 seats
Kerala: Expected increase of about 10 seats
3. No state will be harmed
The Home Minister reiterated that no state—be it Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, or Telangana—will lose seats under the new arrangement.
4. Allegations of spreading wrong information
Shah said misinformation was being spread about the women’s reservation bill and delimitations, and urged members to trust data based on facts.
Bills introduced in Lok Sabha
Women’s Reservation Bill (Constitutional Amendment)
Union Territory Laws (Amendment) Bill
proposals to delimitation
Why is the opposition worried
Opposition parties have expressed concern that delimitation based on population (2011 census) could lead to:
The dominance of northern states may increase
Proportional influence of southern states may reduce
In support of his point, Shah emphasized the following points:
The seat share of southern states will remain broadly stable.
Example: Karnataka’s share, even after increasing the number of seats, will remain around 5%.
Tamil Nadu’s share will increase slightly from 7.18% to 7.23%.
He also said that Maharashtra will get about 24 additional seats, which proves that this expansion is for the entire country and not for any particular region.
future plans to implement
The delimitation will be based on the 2011 census.
The total number of seats in the Lok Sabha may increase to around 850.
The purpose of this extension is to implement the reservation quota for women.
