Michael Conforto, the Chicago Cubs' backup outfielder, received a memorable surprise before his team's series opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night.
His former teammates from the Dodgers presented him with a 2025 World Series ring, celebrating their championship victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.
The ring, a symbol of the Dodgers' second consecutive championship, brought back fond memories for Conforto, who experienced a challenging season in Los Angeles. Despite his struggles, the pregame reunion with his former teammates allowed him to relish the moment.
Reflecting on Past Struggles
Conforto, who batted a career-low .199 with 121 strikeouts during his time with the Dodgers, did not make the postseason roster and had his contract expire. However, he emphasized that the difficulties he faced were overshadowed by the joy of receiving the championship ring.
"Really cool to see all the guys and just have them be excited for me to get my ring," Conforto remarked during the reunion.
Manager's Support
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts expressed his appreciation for Conforto, stating, "I will definitely find Michael and congratulate him. I know he didn't perform the way that people would have liked and he would have liked, but I loved him on the team. I loved what he brought to the Dodgers."
The Unique Championship Ring
Conforto showcased the ring, which features a smaller ring inside, and the accompanying box that includes video highlights of the Dodgers' 2025 season. He described the elaborate presentation as typical of the grand style associated with Los Angeles.
"It's really cool that they put a second ring in there so you can wear it a little bit more low-key," he added.
Lessons Learned
Reflecting on his time with the Dodgers, Conforto noted that he wanted to excel alongside star players like Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts. He admitted that his focus on hitting home runs hindered his performance.
"My focus needed to be on moving runners, having good at bats, getting guys in from third with less than two outs, the little baseball things," he explained. "When you're going out there and trying to do it, it's going to be really hard for you."
Current Performance with the Cubs
After signing a minor-league deal with the Cubs, Conforto made the opening day roster and is currently batting .304 in 23 at-bats, with seven hits, five RBIs, and ten strikeouts.
Family Legacy
Conforto also acknowledged the significance of the moment in relation to his family's accomplishments, specifically mentioning his mother, Tracie Ruiz-Conforto, a two-time Olympic gold medalist in artistic swimming.
"Finally have something that is on the same level," Conforto said. "But she's got two gold, so I got to get another ring."
