Knews Desk-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has once again proved its strong hold in the politics of Gujarat and registered a big victory in the urban body elections. In the results declared by all the 15 municipal corporations of the state, BJP has performed brilliantly and has left the opposition behind in almost all the major cities. This victory is being considered as a sign of strong support base for the party among the urban voters.

Out of the 84 municipalities in the state, BJP has also made a big lead by winning more than 70. This performance has made it clear that the party’s hold remains strong in both rural and urban areas. After these results, the political picture of Gujarat seems to be one-sided. The biggest contest was seen in Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, where BJP captured 158 seats out of total 192 seats. This victory is not only huge in numbers, but also shows that the party’s influence remains intact even in the largest urban area of the state. Congress lagged far behind in this contest and had to be satisfied with limited seats.

The results of Rajkot Municipal Corporation were also very strong in favor of BJP. Here, out of total 72 seats, 65 seats went to BJP’s account, while Congress could get only 7 seats. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) could not even open its account here. In the same district, out of 36 Zilla Panchayat seats, BJP won 34 seats, while Congress and Aam Aadmi Party got one seat each. An interesting political twist was also seen in the Rajkot elections, where Nayanaba Jadeja, sister of Indian cricketer Ravindra Jadeja, contested the elections. He contested the elections from Ward No. 2 on Congress ticket, but faced defeat. This match attracted a lot of discussion at the local level, because this match remained a topic of discussion at political as well as family and social level.

This election proved to be disappointing for the Aam Aadmi Party. The party did register candidature in many municipal bodies, but it could not get any major benefit. The party’s performance was weak at most places and it failed to register an impressive presence. This result is no less than a big shock for Congress also. Congress, which has been trying to make a comeback in Gujarat for many years, failed to stop the strong wave of BJP in this election also. The continued weak performance in urban bodies remains a matter of concern for the party.

Experts believe that these results reflect the BJP’s organizational structure, booth level strength and public confidence in its urban plans. At the same time, this is a signal for the opposition parties that they need to further strengthen their strategy and organization at the grassroots level. The results of Gujarat’s urban body elections have once again strengthened the BJP’s political hold and further increased the challenge for the opposition parties in the state.
