New Delhi: The request by the makers of SS Rajamouli’s upcoming sci-fi epic Varanasi for 150 water tankers for the shoot has been denied. The city’s water body turned down the unit’s request amid the rising demand for water during the current severe summer in Hyderabad, a report in Telangana Today said.
The pan-India film’s shooting is ongoing in the Telangana capital. The crew is filming several underwater sequences at the Hyderabad Film City Studio in Gaganpahad.
What was the request?
As per the report, representatives of Sri Durga Arts, one of the producers of Varanasi, got in touch with the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) urging 150 water tankers of 10,000 litres each.
The letter, addressing HMWSSB Managing Director K Ashok Reddy, said that water was needed to fill a pond for underwater sequences.
The letter pointed out that the water required to be purified to meet the shoot’s quality standards. The production house assured that it would bear the cost of transporting the tankers from the supply point to the shooting location at Gaganpahad. But, officials from the HMWSSB refused to grant the request.
What HMWSSB said
The report said the HMWSSB Managing Director told them the body can not supply the water tankers for Varanasi’s shooting. The report added that the denial was conveyed orally to the film’s team. It is to be noted that the HMWSSB is grappling hard to meet the galloping water demand in the city amid intense heatwave.
Reports said that underwater sequences for the film are being carried out in Hyderabad. The shooting will continue through May. Now, the film’s crew is trying to arrange water from other sources.
What’s the film about
Varanasi marks SS Rajamouli’s first film since his global breakthrough with RRR. The film stars Mahesh Babu as a time-travelling adventurer in search of an ancient artefact from the Ramayana era. The movie also marks Priyanka Chopra’s return to Indian cinema after almost a decade. Prithviraj Sukumaran plays the antagonist.
