The Trump administration is contemplating an executive order aimed at enhancing oversight of artificial intelligence (AI). This initiative would involve the establishment of a task force dedicated to monitoring emerging AI technologies. According to reports from a prominent newspaper, U.S. officials have discussed a proposal that includes a government review process for new AI models. During meetings held last week, White House representatives briefed executives from Anthropic PBC, Alphabet Inc.'s Google, and OpenAI about potential plans.
This move indicates a shift in President Donald Trump's approach to AI. Previously, Trump sought to reduce regulatory burdens to accelerate the establishment of data centers and ensure they receive adequate power. Meanwhile, Microsoft, Google, and Elon Musk's xAI have agreed to provide the U.S. government with expedited access to new AI models for national security testing, as concerns grow regarding the hacking capabilities of Anthropic's recently unveiled Mythos.
AI Models to be Evaluated for Security Risks
The AI Standards and Innovation Center of the Commerce Department announced on Tuesday that this agreement will enable them to conduct research to assess the capabilities and security risks of AI models before deployment. This agreement fulfills the Trump administration's commitment to partner with technology companies in July 2025 to investigate the national security risks associated with their AI models. Microsoft stated that it will collaborate with U.S. government scientists to test AI systems in ways that can identify unexpected behaviors. The company also mentioned that they will develop shared datasets and workflows for testing their models. Additionally, Microsoft has entered into a similar agreement with the UK's AI Security Institute.
