In a significant development for Indian cricket, recent reports indicate that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering a leadership change. Suryakumar Yadav may be replaced as the T20 International captain by Shreyas Iyer. Notably, Yadav, who is already 35 years old, recently led India to victory in the T20 World Cup. In contrast, Iyer is currently in excellent form, having successfully guided Punjab Kings to the IPL 2025 finals and helped Kolkata Knight Riders secure their third IPL title in 2024.

Selectors Seeking Fresh Talent

According to a report from a prominent news outlet, selectors are reportedly frustrated with Yadav's recent performances and are eager to introduce new players into the squad. The Indian team is set to play a two-match T20 International series against Ireland soon, followed by a five-match series against England. Iyer could take over as captain during these matches, as the team's schedule for T20 internationals is quite packed. With the T20 World Cup in 2028 and the Los Angeles Olympics on the horizon, the Indian team may implement significant changes to secure their third consecutive T20 World Cup title.

Performance Concerns for Suryakumar Yadav

The report also suggests that Yadav's underwhelming batting performance could be a key factor in the potential change of captaincy. In the T20 World Cup, he scored 242 runs across nine innings, with a notable 84 runs against the USA. Currently, he is struggling in the ongoing IPL 2026 season, where his team, the Mumbai Indians, is positioned ninth in the points table.
