New Delhi: The Customs Department at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi Airport has seized nearly 35 kilograms of hydroponic cannabis from two foreign nationals in a major anti-drug operation. The officials said the estimated value of the seized narcotics in the international market is around Rs 34.93 crore.
According to customs officials, the two passengers arrived in Delhi from Bangkok on flight TG-323 and as they were acting on prior intelligence inputs and APIS profiling, the Air Intelligence Unit kept a close watch on the passengers after they landed at the airport.
The suspects were stopped after crossing the Customs Green Channel then their luggage was scanned through X-ray machines, where officers noticed suspicious items hidden inside the bags. A detailed search later led to the recovery of 31 vacuum-sealed packets concealed in the luggage.
Expensive and high-potency cannabis recovered
The officials later confirmed that the packets contained hydroponic weed, a highly potent form of cannabis grown using advanced cultivation techniques. In comparison to regular marijuana, hydroponic cannabis is considered more expensive and stronger in effect. The total weight of the seized contraband, including the packaging material, was found to be 34,935 grams.
Probe underway into drug network
Both accused have been arrested under various sections of the NDPS Act. Along with this, the customs officials have also seized the narcotic substance along with all related packaging material. Investigators are now trying to determine who was supposed to receive the consignment in Delhi and an international drug syndicate is involved in the operations.
