Chennai: Actor-turned-politician Vijay is set to take oath as the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Saturday at 11 AM after formally staking claim to form the government before Governor RV Arlekar in Chennai.

The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief met the Governor on Friday along with senior party leaders and submitted letters of support from allied parties and legislators backing his claim to lead the government.

The development comes days after a fractured verdict in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections triggered intense political discussions over government formation.

Tamil Nadu Set For ‘Vijay Thalapathy’ Government? TVK Nears Majority With CPI, CPI(M) And VCK Support

TVK Crosses Majority Mark With Allies’ Support

TVK had emerged as the single-largest party in the 234-member Assembly by winning 108 seats but remained short of the majority figure of 118.

The numbers shifted after Congress extended support with its five MLAs. The Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India (Marxist), and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) also backed Vijay’s bid to form the government.

With support from these parties, the TVK-led alliance crossed the required majority mark and submitted proof of support to the Governor.

Sources said the Governor sought clarity regarding the exact number of supporting MLAs before approving the claim for government formation.

Political Shift In Tamil Nadu

The 2026 Assembly election has significantly altered Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. The results ended the long-standing dominance of the DMK and AIADMK, which had controlled state politics for decades.
