Chepauk has seen plenty of famous Chennai Super Kings nights, but Urvil Patel produced something truly wild against Lucknow Super Giants. Walking in with CSK chasing a huge target, Urvil turned the powerplay into a personal hitting exhibition and left LSG’s bowlers looking completely stunned.
In just a few minutes, he went from promising aggressor to record-breaker. Sixes flew into the stands, the crowd found its voice, and Chennai’s chase suddenly looked alive in the most dramatic way possible. By the time he reached his half-century off only 13 balls, Urvil Patel had equaled the fastest fifty in IPL history and given Chepauk an innings it will remember for a long time.
CSK vs LSG: Urvil Smashes six sixes in first eight balls at Chepauk
Urvil Patel’s assault was not a normal powerplay cameo. It was chaos with timing. He became the first batter in IPL history to smash six sixes off the first eight balls of an innings, racing to 41 off just eight deliveries. The previous best score after eight balls in an IPL innings was 33, which shows how far ahead of the curve this knock was.
Avesh Khan was the first to feel the full force. In the fifth over, Urvil cleared his front leg and launched repeated blows over the leg side, taking advantage of anything even slightly in the slot. The over went for 25 runs, with Urvil Patel hitting four sixes and immediately putting Lucknow under pressure.
Digvesh Singh Rathi then came on, but he too could not stop the storm. Urvil Patel backed away, swung cleanly over long-on, slog-swept deep into the stands and then sent another 98-metre hit over wide mid-wicket. The striking was not just powerful, it was fearless. At one point, he had faced six balls and hit five of them out of the ground.
Joint-Fastest fifty in IPL history for Urvil Patel
Urvil Patel reached his fifty in just 13 balls, equaling Yashasvi Jaiswal’s record for the fastest half-century in IPL history. Jaiswal had achieved the feat for Rajasthan Royals against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2023, and Urvil Patel has now joined him at the top of the list.
The fastest IPL fifties now include:
13 balls – Yashasvi Jaiswal vs KKR, Kolkata, 2023
13 balls – Urvil Patel vs LSG, Chepauk, 2026
14 balls – KL Rahul vs DC, Mohali, 2018
14 balls – Pat Cummins vs MI, Pune, 2022
14 balls – Romario Shepherd vs CSK, Bengaluru, 2025
Urvil was 48 off 11 balls when he launched Mohammed Shami for his seventh six of the innings. He could no longer break the record, but he still equaled it with a single to point. The Chepauk crowd rose as one, chanting his name while confetti went up in the stands.
Emotional note for his father after joint fastest IPL fifty
The celebration made the moment even more special. After reaching his fifty, Urvil folded his hands in prayer and then pulled out a piece of paper from his pocket. The note read, “This is for you Papa.” There were also a few more lines written in Gujarati, his mother tongue.
It was a deeply personal touch after a brutally powerful innings. In a game where the numbers were already staggering, that little note added emotion to the madness. Urvil did not just break records; he gave the innings a memory beyond the scorecard.
CSK break powerplay record at Chepauk
Urvil’s innings also helped CSK record the highest powerplay score in Chennai. LSG had earlier reset the mark with 91 in their first innings, but Chennai took it back in style during the chase. With Urvil launching sixes and Ruturaj Gaikwad also starting sharply, CSK stormed through the first six overs.
Gaikwad’s start should not be overlooked either. He reached 24 off his first 10 balls, the most he has ever scored in the first 10 balls of an IPL innings. Coming into the game, his strike rate in the first 10 balls of an innings in IPL 2026 was only 124.71, among the lowest for regular openers. Against LSG, he looked far more proactive.
But this powerplay belonged to Urvil. He came into the match with a balls-per-boundary ratio of 2 in the IPL, and then made that stat look almost conservative. Five sixes came almost back-to-back, and even when one shot went for four instead of six, he reacted with a wry smile because he knew he had missed out on another maximum.
CSK vs LSG: A Chepauk innings for the ages
This was the kind of knock that changes both a match and a player’s reputation. Urvil Patel did not build slowly, did not wait to settle, and did not allow LSG to control the chase. He attacked Avesh, Digvesh and Shami with the same ruthless intent, forcing Lucknow to rethink their plans within minutes.
For CSK, this innings could be massive in their playoff push. They needed a statement at Chepauk, and Urvil gave them one with record-breaking violence. For LSG, it was a brutal reminder that even a big first-innings total can disappear quickly when a batter gets into this kind of mood.
Chepauk has celebrated many legends in yellow. On Sunday, it stood up for Urvil Patel, the man who turned 13 balls into IPL history.
