New Census Form Raises Eyebrows

In preparation for India's forthcoming census, a new form featuring 34 questions has been developed, prompting a reevaluation of traditional family structures. One of the most talked-about inquiries is, 'How many wives do you have?' The response to this question will determine whether a family is classified as single or double. According to census officials, if an individual has two wives, they will be categorized as part of a double family, meaning two couples.

Conversely, if a woman has two husbands, she will be counted as a single family, representing only one couple. This provision has been designed to accommodate regions practicing polygamy as well as modern family structures. There are no restrictions based on age or gender regarding who can be the head of the family, which is another significant change in the form. The name of the family head will be filled in based on who the family members choose.

Any elder, including grandparents or daughters-in-law, can serve as the head of the family. Field trainer Shravan Jaiswal explained that regardless of how many men or elders are present in the family, if a daughter-in-law, grandmother, daughter, or any woman is recognized as the head, her name will be recorded. There is no age limit for the head of the family.

Domestic Workers Counted as Family Members

If a domestic worker lives with the family and shares meals, they will be considered a family member. Additionally, four friends living together in a room can also be recognized as a family, with one friend designated as the head.

A room is deemed essential for sleeping. Areas like verandas, galleries, or balconies will not be counted as rooms. If a family sleeps in a shop, it will not be considered a home, and the number of rooms will be recorded as zero. This will help identify how many families are living without adequate housing.

Officials have indicated that this form has been prepared after thorough testing. Citizens can fill out the form themselves, but the field team will also conduct verification on-site.
