During the war against Iran, Israel quietly established a secret military base in the Iraqi desert. This base was used to support airstrikes on Iran. Several sources, including US officials, stated that Israel established this base just before the war began and that the US was aware of it, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.
This secret base housed Israeli Special Forces and Air Force personnel. It served as a support center for the Israeli Air Force. Search and rescue teams were also stationed there, ensuring the immediate rescue of pilots if an Israeli aircraft crashed during an attack in Iran.
Israel offered help to the US
The report states that a US F-15 fighter jet crashed near Isfahan, Iran. Israel offered to assist in the rescue operation, but the US military itself safely evacuated its two airmen. However, Israel conducted airstrikes to protect the operation.
This secret base was nearly captured in early March. According to Iraqi media, a local shepherd observed helicopter movements and suspicious military activity in the area. He alerted authorities, prompting the Iraqi army to investigate.
According to sources, Israel launched an airstrike on Iraqi troops to conceal its presence. One Iraqi soldier was killed and two others were injured in the attack. Qais al-Muhammadawi, deputy commander of Iraq’s Joint Operations Command, criticized the action, stating that the attack was carried out without Iraq’s approval and without any coordination. Iraq’s Counter Terrorism Service later sent two more teams, which confirmed the military presence in the area. However, an Iraqi government spokesman declined to comment on the incident and declined to say whether they were aware of the Israeli base.
Iraq filed a complaint with the UN
Iraq later filed a complaint with the United Nations regarding the incident. Initially, Iraq suspected US involvement in the attack, but sources later confirmed that the US was not involved. The US has also carried out numerous attacks in Iraq to protect its bases and other assets.
The report states that Iraq’s western desert region is vast and sparsely populated, making it an ideal location for secret military bases. The US previously used this area in military operations against Saddam Hussein in 1991 and 2003. During the war, Israel carried out thousands of airstrikes in Iran. In March, Israeli Air Force Chief Tomer Bar stated that special units of the Air Force were carrying out secret missions that the public could not even imagine.
