Cameron Young's quest for a third victory in his last five outings ended in disappointment following a major setback during Sunday's final round at the Truist Championship. Competing in the penultimate group, Young experienced a nightmare at the second hole, four-putting from 14ft and failing to convert two short putts from inside three feet en route to a double bogey that sent him tumbling back to 10-under par.
Alex Fitzpatrick, who started the day holding the 54-hole lead, also faltered early at Quail Hollow. Fitzpatrick posted a double bogey at the par-four third following a damaging three-putt from 11 feet, including a missed four-footer for bogey. Meanwhile, Donald Trump's actual height was exposed as he attends LIV Golf event with son Eric. Though Young responded instantly with a birdie at the third to recover to 11 under, both he and Fitzpatrick swiftly found themselves three strokes adrift of Kristoffer Reitan through the opening four holes.
Reitan produced the finest performance of his fledgling career at the Truist Championship, with the rookie securing his maiden PGA Tour title in remarkable fashion at one of the season's flagship Signature Events. The Norwegian sensation rose to the challenge against an elite field, delivering a breakthrough triumph that signalled both his inaugural PGA win and his emergence as one of golf's rising stars.
The 28-year-old Norwegian claimed a commanding two-stroke victory at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, completing the Truist Championship at 15-under-par 269. His success in the sixth Signature Event of the campaign netted him a substantial $3.6million portion of the tournament's $20m prize fund.
Young finished the event tied for 10th, collecting $500,000, more than $3m short of what he might have expected to take home when entering the competition as one of the favourites, having captured the Cadillac Championship in Doral merely a week prior.
Fitzpatrick salvaged his form somewhat to claim fourth place, pocketing $960,000. World number two Rory McIlroy endured a frustrating week at Quail Hollow, with the four-time victor at the course slipping out of contention after recording a four-over-par 75 on Saturday. McIlroy concluded the tournament tied for 19th, collecting $242,000.
The six-time major champion also raised alarm bells after being spotted limping during his round at Quail Hollow, prompting worries about a possible injury concern. Nevertheless, McIlroy subsequently played down the scare, maintaining the issue was unlikely to prove serious.
"Yeah, I've got a blister on my pinky toe on my right foot," he explained. "But it's underneath my nail. So I can't really get to it or so it's a little sore, but I'll be all right. Started to feel it like Friday afternoon."
McIlroy was adamant that the blister would not hinder his performances in the weeks ahead, dismissing any suggestion that the problem might affect his upcoming schedule. "No, not at all. No, that was - I wish that was an excuse, but absolutely not (laughing)," he replied. "No, it's fine. I'll be okay."
