New Delhi. Political turmoil is often seen around the world, and there is no certainty as to what may happen in politics. Meanwhile, more than 70 MPs have appealed to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to resign. This comes as the ruling party suffered a major defeat in local and regional elections, deepening the leadership crisis within the government. The pressure increased further when four ministerial aides resigned, and several senior leaders questioned whether Starmer would be able to contest the 2029 general election on behalf of the party.

Support of 81 MPs is needed.
According to British media reports, several cabinet ministers, including Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper and Interior Minister Shabana Mahmood, have asked Starmer to consider stepping down following Labour’s poor electoral performance. According to Labour Party rules, the support of 81 MPs is needed to initiate a leadership change process.

Starmer refuses to resign

Despite the growing opposition, Starmer flatly refused to resign. He said he would win back the people’s trust. In a speech to party supporters in London, Starmer said, “I know there are going to be doubters, and I have to prove them wrong, and I will do that.” This anger comes after Labour’s heavy defeat in council elections across England and losses in Scotland and Wales, where the party lost power for the first time since 1999.

Leaders criticized Starmer.
Meanwhile, the hard-right parties Reform UK and the Green Party benefited. Several resigning leaders criticized Starmer’s leadership, and some said the public no longer had confidence in Starmer and the party needed new leadership. Starmer became Prime Minister in July 2024 after a landslide victory, ousting the 14-year-old Conservative government.
