News of Brandon Clarke’s death left the NBA world stunned. The Memphis Grizzlies big man was found dead inside a Los Angeles home on Monday at just 29 years old. A sudden tragedy that, in recent hours, has become intertwined with increasingly troubling details emerging from the investigation and court documents.

According to TMZ Clarke had been scheduled to appear before an Arkansas judge on May 15, just days after his death. The player had reportedly been involved in a criminal case stemming from a traffic stop in April.

The accusations against him were serious. Authorities claimed illegal substances were found during the stop, including kratom, a pain-relief substance widely used in the United States but surrounded by controversy. Clarke had reportedly been charged with trafficking controlled substances, as well as fleeing at high speed after allegedly attempting to evade police during the pursuit.

The death of the former Gonzaga standout is now under investigation. Los Angeles Fire Department responders arrived around 5 p.m. Monday for a medical emergency, but Clarke had already passed away when paramedics arrived.

Authorities are reportedly evaluating the possibility of an overdose. Material allegedly connected to drug use was said to have been found inside the residence, while the official cause of death will only be determined after the autopsy.

Shortly after the news broke, the NBA community rallied around the player’s family. Clarke’s agency, Priority Sports released an emotional statement.
