After Ramkrishna Ghosh, CSK suffers another blow after overseas bowler flies back with thigh injury
Cricket Gully | May 14, 2026 11:39 AM CST

Chennai Super Kings suffered another injury setback in IPL 2026 after allrounder Jamie Overton returned to England because of a right thigh injury, leaving the franchise further depleted ahead of the final phase of the league stage. CSK confirmed the development on Wednesday night but did not specify whether the England allrounder would return before the season concludes. On their social media, CSK wrote,

“Jamie Overton has a right thigh injury and will be returning to the UK for further assessment and management."

The timing leaves Chennai with limited options ahead of their away fixture against Lucknow Super Giants on Friday. With only three league matches remaining, Overton’s absence adds to a season where the franchise has regularly announced unavailable players with almost the same frequency as team combinations.

Despite the growing injury list, CSK remain fifth on the points table with 12 points from 11 matches and are still mathematically alive in the playoff race.

Overton emerged among CSK’s few consistent performers

Overton had become one of Chennai’s most productive contributors during the campaign, particularly in the absence of several frontline players. Across 10 matches, he scored 136 runs at an average of 34.00 and a strike rate of 158.14 while also taking 14 wickets.

His final appearance came against Lucknow Super Giants on May 11, where he picked up 3 for 36 and won the Player of the Match award in CSK’s five-wicket victory at Chepauk.

The allrounder also delivered impactful lower-order innings through the season. He scored 43 against Rajasthan Royals, struck 37 from 16 balls against Royal Challengers Bengaluru and added an unbeaten 18 from six deliveries versus Gujarat Titans.

With the ball, his best spell came against Delhi Capitals where he returned figures of 4 for 18. He currently stands as CSK’s second-highest wicket-taker this season with an economy rate of 8.89 and strike rate of 12.00.

Injury list continues expanding for Chennai

Hours before announcing Overton’s departure, Chennai had confirmed Karnataka allrounder Macneil Noronha as a replacement for Ramakrishna Ghosh, who suffered a broken foot during his IPL debut.

The franchise had already lost Nathan Ellis before the tournament began because of a hamstring injury. Khaleel Ahmed later sustained a quadricep injury, while batter Ayush Mhatre was ruled out with a hamstring problem.

Dewald Brevis missed the opening three games due to a side strain, and both MS Dhoni and Australian quick Spencer Johnson are yet to feature this season because of fitness concerns.

For a side still positioned within reach of the playoffs, Chennai’s campaign increasingly resembles an exercise in squad management conducted alongside a running medical bulletin.
