In the 59th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) defeated Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 7 wickets. In this match played at Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Friday (May 15), CSK had set a target of 188 runs for LSG, which the host team easily achieved by losing 3 wickets in 16.4 overs. Opener Mitchell Marsh played a brilliant inning of 90 runs in 38 balls.

This was the fourth win for LSG, which was out of the playoff race. Besides, he also avenged the defeat against CSK in the last match. After this crushing defeat, CSK has slipped to sixth place in the points table. Now he will have to win both his remaining matches to reach the playoffs. Apart from this, he will have to pray that the results of other teams also go in his favor.

Marsh unfortunately run out

Mitchell Marsh played big shots from the very first over in the run chase. He targeted Anshul Kamboj in the fifth over and hit 4 sixes in his first 4 balls. Marsh then completed his fifty in 21 balls by hitting two consecutive fours against Spencer Johnson. He was thrashing the CSK bowlers all-round and was easily on his way to a century when unfortunately he was run out.

Nicholas Pooran, who came to the crease after the dismissal of Josh Inglis (36), played a straight drive shot, which touched the fingers of bowler Mukesh Chaudhary and hit the stumps. Marsh was found outside the crease at the non-striker’s end. He returned to the pavilion after scoring 90 runs in 38 balls with the help of 9 fours and 7 sixes. After the departure of Marsh, LSG’s innings slowed down a bit but Puran hit 4 consecutive sixes against Kamboj and took them to the target with 20 balls remaining.

Akash Singh laid the foundation of victory

After losing the toss and opting to bat first, CSK’s top order was shaken by Akash Singh. This left-arm fast bowler, playing his first match of this season, pushed CSK on the backfoot by taking the wickets of Ruturaj Gaikwad (13), Sanju Samson (20) and Urvil Patel (6). 24 year old Akash took 3 wickets for 26 runs in 4 overs. After the score was 51/3, Karthik Sharma and Dewald Brewis took over the CSK innings. Both of them made a partnership of 70 runs for the fourth wicket.

Brevis became the victim of Mohammed Shami after scoring 25 runs in 16 balls. Karthik stood firm at one end and scored an inning of 71 runs in 42 balls with the help of 6 fours and 5 sixes. Shivam Dubey scored unbeaten 32 runs in 16 balls to take CSK to the score of 187/5 but it proved to be insufficient.
