Water Metro: The country is soon set to offer its citizens a new and magnificent mode of travel. The Central Government is currently preparing to launch Water Metro services in 18 cities across the nation. The objective of this initiative is to alleviate urban traffic congestion and provide people with an affordable, comfortable, and rapid means of transportation. In the first phase of the project, the government has selected cities such as Guwahati, Srinagar, Patna, Varanasi, Ayodhya, and Prayagraj. In the near future, this service is slated to be introduced in other cities as well.
What is a Water Metro?
The Water Metro is a service designed to transport people from one location to another via waterways, utilizing large electric or hybrid boats. It functions exactly like a conventional metro train system, but operates across rivers, lakes, or backwaters.
The government notes that the cost of constructing a Water Metro is significantly lower compared to that of a standard metro rail system. It requires minimal land acquisition and can be constructed relatively quickly. For these very reasons, plans are now being formulated to introduce this service in numerous cities across the country.
India's First Water Metro is in Kerala
It is worth noting that India's first Water Metro is the Kochi Water Metro. It was inaugurated in 2023 in the city of Kochi, Kerala. Today, it has emerged as a major convenience for both residents and tourists alike. The network comprises a total of 38 stations and operates daily from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
What is the Fare?
The fare for the Kochi Water Metro has been kept quite affordable. The maximum ticket price is approximately ₹40. Additionally, regular commuters have the option to purchase weekly or monthly passes. A weekly pass costs ₹180, while a monthly pass is available for ₹600.
Consequently, it is anticipated that the fares for the new Water Metro services set to launch in Varanasi, Srinagar, and other cities will also remain well within the budget of the common citizen. This means that people will be able to enjoy a comfortable commute—while avoiding traffic congestion—at an affordable cost.
These Special Amenities Will Be Available
On the Water Metro, passengers are provided with amenities such as free Wi-Fi, mobile charging points, CCTV cameras, and life jackets. The boats feature comfortable seating, and passengers can also enjoy scenic views during their journey. Consequently, it is anticipated that in the near future, the Water Metro could emerge as a major and affordable mode of urban transportation.
