Delhi Parking Scam: Did you know that fake parking tickets are being issued—and illegal collections are being made—across various parts of Delhi? Read on to find out what steps you need to take to protect yourself from this scam.
Delhi Parking Scam: Parking your vehicle outdoors in Delhi is no longer just expensive; it is becoming increasingly risky as well. Complaints regarding fake parking tickets and illegal monetary collections are surfacing from numerous areas across the city. In some places, money is being collected without any visible rate list, while in others, arbitrary charges are being levied on people in exchange for bogus receipts. On social media and local forums, people are constantly sharing their experiences—instances where they were asked to pay inflated amounts in the name of parking, or where money was collected by individuals lacking any official identification.
What is the Full Scope of the Parking Scam?
In this scam, certain individuals pose as representatives of the MCD, Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), or parking contractors to collect money from vehicles parked along the roadside. Often, they carry small handheld devices, fake tickets, or QR codes, leading people to believe they are legitimate officials. Residents in several Delhi localities—such as Hauz Khas, Majnu-ka-Tilla, and various market areas—have complained that despite the absence of any clearly displayed parking fee information, they were forcibly made to pay. In many instances, the applicable parking rates were not even printed on the receipts provided.
The New Trap: QR Codes and Online Payments
The scam is no longer limited merely to the issuance of fake tickets. In numerous cases, people are now being asked to make payments by scanning a QR code. Some of these fraudulent links and messages are designed to closely resemble official government websites. The Delhi Police has previously issued warnings regarding fake e-challans and online payment scams. Cybercriminals exploit official government names and logos to dupe unsuspecting citizens.
How to Distinguish Between Legitimate and Fake Parking Services?
Check the Parking Board/Signage:
A legitimate parking facility will always display a rate list, operating hours, and the name of the authorized agency. If someone is simply soliciting money while standing by the roadside, exercise caution.
Check the Details on the Ticket/Receipt:
The receipt should clearly display the name of the parking facility, the time of entry, the vehicle’s registration number, and the applicable parking fee. A slip lacking printed information may be suspicious.
Employee ID
Every member of the parking staff carries an ID card or wears a uniform. If anyone hesitates to display their ID, be sure to question them.
Do Not Scan
Before making a payment via an unfamiliar QR code or link, verify the name and details associated with it. Fraudulent links can compromise your bank account.
What to Do If You Are Asked to Pay an Excessive Amount?
Demand a receipt.
Maintain a record via photos and videos.
Note down the exact location of the incident.
File a complaint with the Delhi Police or the MCD helpline.
Please Note:
A minor oversight can lead to significant financial loss. Amidst the rising prevalence of digital and local scams in Delhi, citizens need to be more vigilant than ever. Often, people pay up simply to avoid a confrontation or out of haste; however, this very behavior emboldens such criminal syndicates. Therefore, the next time you park your vehicle anywhere, do not merely inspect the parking spot—make sure to also verify the credentials of the individuals collecting the parking fees. By doing so, you can protect yourself from scams and help safeguard others as well.
