This year, the placement rate at IIT Bombay dipped to 70 percent; however, the average salary surged to ₹26.45 lakh. Let’s dive into the full details…

A surprising picture regarding placements has emerged from IIT Bombay—one of the country’s premier educational institutions. While the placement rate saw a slight decline, settling at approximately 70 percent, the salaries offered to students witnessed a significant increase. The average annual package has risen to ₹26.45 lakh—an increase of over 10 percent compared to the previous year. In other words, while the number of students securing jobs decreased slightly, those who did land a position received better remuneration.

Placement statistics for the 2024-25 session indicate that, despite the prevailing global uncertainty surrounding recruitment, the demand for IIT Bombay students remains undiminished. Numerous major companies visited the campus to extend job offers to students. A total of 417 companies participated in the drive, spanning sectors such as engineering, IT, consulting, finance, research, and emerging technologies.

A total of 2,469 students registered for the placement process. Of these, 2,040 students actively participated across both phases of the drive. Ultimately, 1,422 students accepted job offers. Additionally, 260 students accepted pre-placement offers they had received prior to the main placement season.

Students Pursue Alternative Paths

According to reports, not every registered student participated in the placement process. Many students chose to chart a different course for themselves. Some decided to launch their own startups, while others opted to pursue higher education or research. Notably, students pursuing a PhD often gravitate toward post-doctoral research or research fellowships; consequently, their numbers do not typically appear in the placement statistics.

Breakdown of Offers Extended

When analyzed by sector, engineering and technology firms extended the highest number of offers, totaling 429. This was followed by IT and software coding companies, which extended 393 offers. The consulting sector extended 126 offers, followed by 114 from data analytics and 112 from the finance sector.

This time, there was also a notable interest from international companies. A total of 65 students accepted offers from companies based in Japan, Taiwan, Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and the USA. Meanwhile, multinational corporations operating in India hired 840 students, while Indian companies recruited 517 students.

In terms of academic programs, B.Tech students demonstrated the strongest performance. Out of the 829 B.Tech students who participated in the placement drive, 678 secured jobs. Students pursuing dual degrees also performed well. The placement rate for M.Tech students exceeded 72 percent.

These Departments Led the Way

Regarding specific departments, Computer Science and Engineering took the lead. Out of the 277 students in this department, 258 secured employment. Electrical Engineering students received 244 offers, while Mechanical Engineering students received 213. Students from Civil and Chemical Engineering disciplines also received a significant number of offers.

The situation for Ph.D. students was somewhat different. This year, 150 Ph.D. students participated in the placement process—a higher number than in the previous year. However, the actual number of students securing jobs declined from 32 to 28. Nevertheless, their average annual salary increased from ₹18.46 lakhs to ₹19.64 lakhs.
