Aldi building new store near major UK city - metres away from Lidl

A new Aldi store is coming to a UK town, and it will be just metres away from branch of its low-budget supermarket rival Lidl. The new Aldi location is currently under construction in Dunbarton, a town in the central belt of Scotland, around 15 miles northwest of Glasgow.

Aldi is a close competitor of fellow German grocery chain Lidl, with both brands often going head-to-head for the lowest prices and occasionally trading the odd barb on social media. And it looks as though the store on Dumbarton's Castle Street could be the latest chapter in their rivalry, as the new Aldi branch is only around 75 metres away from an existing Lidl shop.

Both supermarkets are also accessed via the same road, the Glasgow Times reports, presenting budget-hunting shoppers with a new dilemma.

A satellite image shows the two sites separated only by a carpark between them. An Aldi spokesperson told the newspaper the new site will create as many as 40 jobs, and will help locals shop and save closer to home.

It's set to have nearly 90 parking spaces, including six disabled bays.

This will include EV spaces, spaces for parents and children, and click and collect spaces, as well as EV chargers, as per the outlet.

The site, which is part of a £1.6billion expansion expected to add a further 80 stores to its estate across the country over the next two years.

The Castle Street branch is set to open at some point later this year, though a specific date has yet to be confirmed.

The spokesperson said construction is "progressing well" as they move towards welcoming shoppers later in 2026.

Aldi has more than 1,050 stores across the UK, and is pursuing its longer term goal of having 1,500 stores nationwide.
