As many had feared, captain Giulia Gwinn will be forced to sit out Germany’s crucial women’s World Cup qualifying fixtures due to injury.
The Bayern Munich defender, who recently celebrated a domestic double, is scheduled to undergo surgery on her left shoulder and will therefore miss the upcoming matches against Norway and Slovenia on 5 and 9 June respectively. The German Football Association (DFB) confirmed this development to the newspaper Bild.
Gwinn suffered a shoulder dislocation in mid-April during Germany’s first-leg World Cup qualifier against Austria. “It’s clear that the shoulder requires surgery,” she stated last week following the team’s cup victory in Cologne.
Germany will host Norway in Cologne, where a win could secure their early qualification for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil. After a goalless draw against Austria, Germany currently lead Group A4 by just a single point ahead of Norway.
