Borussia Dortmund are reportedly considering a move for AZ Alkmaar's prolific midfielder Sven Mijnans, who has emerged as one of the Eredivisie’s standout performers this season.
According to reports from the Alkmaar-based regional daily *Noordhollands Dagblad*, the 26-year-old playmaker enjoyed an exceptional campaign with AZ. Mijnans netted 21 goals and provided nine assists across 50 competitive matches, capping off his season by lifting the Dutch Cup with his team.
Speaking to *Noordhollands Dagblad*, Mijnans confirmed that multiple clubs have expressed interest in signing him, though he chose not to name any. He remarked, “It’s still very early, but I think I’d be best suited to the German or Italian leagues.”
At Borussia Dortmund, the upcoming free transfer departure of Julian Brandt this summer will open up space in the attacking midfield role. Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen are also believed to be keeping tabs on Mijnans’s situation.
Mijnans joined AZ Alkmaar from Sparta Rotterdam in 2023 for a transfer fee of €2.5 million and quickly established himself as a key figure in the squad. Last summer, he was eager to move to PSV Eindhoven, but AZ blocked the transfer. In return, the club offered him a salary increase and a promise that he could leave for a major foreign club this year. His current contract with AZ runs until 2028.
Despite his impressive domestic form, Mijnans is still waiting for his first senior call-up to the Netherlands national team.
Reflecting on his extra year in Alkmaar, Mijnans admitted to having “mixed feelings.” He said, “We won the cup, and I comfortably achieved my personal goals in terms of scoring and assisting. But if I had joined PSV, I would have won trophies there too, wouldn’t I? And maybe that would have brought me closer to the national team.”
PSV Eindhoven went on to win the Eredivisie title, while Mijnans, a former Netherlands U21 international, remains on the sidelines for the senior squad. Although his name has occasionally surfaced in discussions, he is not currently considered a strong candidate for Ronald Koeman’s World Cup roster.
