Between celebrating the Bundesliga title and preparing for the DFB Cup final, Tom Bischof looked back on his debut season with FC Bayern.
“If I had known it would turn out like this, I would have signed immediately,” the 20-year-old versatile midfielder told Sky. Bischof has become an important rotation player under manager Vincent Kompany. Over 37 matches, he accumulated 1,654 minutes on the pitch, netting three goals and assisting three more. “Overall, I’m really satisfied because I’ve learned a lot. I’ve become more flexible in my playing style.”
Previously at TSG Hoffenheim, Bischof mostly operated as a central midfielder. In Munich, however, Kompany often used him as a full-back due to the intense competition for midfield spots from Joshua Kimmich, Aleksandar Pavlovic, and Leon Goretzka.
“I never thought I’d ever play as a left or right-back,” Bischof admitted. “But I believe I’ve been able to help the team in that role. Initially, it was tough to accept, especially during the first couple of games. Then I spoke to Joshua Kimmich, who told me that my chance would come. It worked out well in the end, and I’m glad I could step in on the left side and contribute to the team.”
Kimmich himself had a similar journey—he joined Bayern as a young midfielder but started out as a full-back before solidifying his place in central midfield and eventually becoming vice-captain.
Tom Bischof also recounted the experience of scoring his first goal for FC Bayern at the Allianz Arena.
Bischof said playing in the Champions League for the first time was “a childhood dream come true.” “After that, scoring at home was very important for me, just to experience that feeling,” he explained. Following his brace in Bayern’s 3-2 away win over SC Freiburg in early April, he finally found the net at the Allianz Arena on the last day of the season, contributing to a 5-1 win against 1. FC Köln. “I think you could see—I completely lost it for a moment. But I just had to let my emotions out. That goal meant a lot to me.”
On Saturday, Bischof and FC Bayern will take on VfB Stuttgart in the DFB Cup final. Whether he will feature in Germany’s World Cup squad remains uncertain. “In my mind and heart, I’ve done everything I can to be ready,” he said. “Being part of that squad would be a dream come true.” National coach Julian Nagelsmann is set to announce the official squad on Thursday at 1 p.m.
