Estadio Akron is one of three stadiums in Mexico chosen to host matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The venue will stage four fixtures, including a crucial group stage encounter between co-hosts Mexico and South Korea.

It is among the 16 official World Cup 2026 venues across Canada, Mexico, and the United States and is the smallest of the three Mexican stadiums selected for the tournament.

Here’s everything you need to know about this World Cup venue – from Estadio Akron’s capacity and history to its role in the upcoming global event.

Estadio Akron is well connected to Guadalajara’s public transport system. Several local bus routes, including A12, T01, T02, and C109, stop near the stadium, making it easily accessible for fans.

The stadium is also served by the Estadio Akron station on the Mi Macro Periferico line, part of Guadalajara’s rapid transit bus network that runs in a partial loop around the northern, western, and southern parts of the city.

Specific transport and logistics arrangements for World Cup spectators are yet to be officially announced.

Located in Zapopan, Mexico, Estadio Akron will host matches under the name Estadio Guadalajara during the 2026 World Cup. Zapopan forms part of the greater Guadalajara metropolitan region in the western Mexican state of Jalisco. Since 2010, it has been the home ground of Chivas de Guadalajara, one of Mexico’s most prominent football clubs. Notably, Estadio Jalisco, located southeast of Zapopan in Guadalajara itself, hosted matches in both previous World Cups held in Mexico.

Only Toronto’s BMO Field will have a smaller capacity than Estadio Akron, which is approximately half the size of AT&T Stadium in Texas – the largest venue of the 2026 World Cup. Despite hosting just four matches, the stadium will be the stage for Mexico’s vital second group stage clash in June.

Since its inauguration in 2010, Estadio Akron has hosted three international friendlies featuring Mexico’s national team, recording one win, one draw, and one loss. It also recently hosted one of the intercontinental play-off fixtures in March.

The home ground of CD Guadalajara will feature four matches during the World Cup, all of which will be group stage fixtures. Among them, the second match will be a Group A contest between Mexico and South Korea – a key game for the hosts.

Situated on the western outskirts of Zapopan, Mexico, Estadio Akron lies close to the scenic Bosque La Primavera nature reserve.

For the 2026 World Cup, Estadio Akron is expected to have a seating capacity of 48,000, making it the second-smallest stadium in the tournament and the smallest of the three Mexican venues.

The stadium has hosted several matches involving the Mexican men’s national football team and serves as the permanent home of CD Guadalajara.

Originally constructed between 2007 and 2010 after delays, Estadio Akron was designed as a multi-purpose sports facility for Zapopan and the greater Guadalajara area. Before moving to this modern venue, Chivas de Guadalajara played at Estadio Jalisco, sharing it with other clubs for nearly 50 years.

Since relocating to Zapopan, Guadalajara have won the domestic championship once, clinching the 2017 Clausura title, and later captured the CONCACAF Champions League in 2018.

Estadio Akron will host four group stage matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
