There’s something truly remarkable about witnessing a country claim its first-ever major international title.

While football’s global powerhouses have traditionally ruled the World Cup and the European Championship, occasionally a breakthrough victory emerges that defines an entire generation.

For Portugal, that moment arrived at Euro 2016.

Former Manchester United winger Nani played an integral role in Fernando Santos’ victorious squad. His crucial goal in the semi-final against Wales, which gave Portugal a 2-0 lead, was one of the defining moments of their campaign.

“I celebrated with incredible emotion – representing Portugal has always been special to me,” Nani shared with FourFourTwo. “Scoring in a semi-final and contributing to our journey to the final was beyond words.”

“And then, to be part of history by lifting the trophy – that’s something I’ll never forget. We remember that victory with immense pride because it meant everything – to the team, to the country, and to our careers.”

The final itself was nothing short of an emotional rollercoaster, especially after Cristiano Ronaldo left the field injured just 25 minutes into the match, visibly distraught.

Reflecting on that moment, Nani said, “It was a mix of worry and frustration. Cristiano was vital for us. His presence on the pitch gave us immense confidence – he always kept the opponents uneasy.”

“When he went off, we thought, ‘We’ve lost our best player, what’s going to happen now?’ But at the same time, it motivated us. We united even more as a team and fought for him.”

Nani concluded his international career in 2017 after earning 112 caps for Portugal – a tally surpassed only by Cristiano Ronaldo, Joao Moutinho, Pepe and Luis Figo. Reflecting on what that achievement meant, he said, “It meant everything. The national team brings together incredible footballers, true stars, so being part of such an elite group was extraordinary.”

“I’m immensely proud to have played a pivotal part in winning the Euros, the most significant trophy our team has ever achieved.”

“That title symbolised the history, dedication, and dreams of an entire nation.”
