Tyler Fletcher: How Carrick Plans to Shape the Young Manchester United Midfielder’s Role

Manchester United are focusing on a major rebuild of their midfield this summer, but insiders suggest that Tyler Fletcher could help the club save millions in the transfer window.

With Casemiro’s exit already confirmed and Manuel Ugarte expected to follow, INEOS are determined to revitalise the struggling midfield engine at Old Trafford.

Michael Carrick, recently appointed as permanent head coach on a two-year contract after an impressive interim spell, guided the team to Champions League qualification primarily by returning to a more familiar 4-2-3-1 formation. This tactical shift followed Ruben Amorim’s unsuccessful 3-4-2-1 experiment, which ultimately led to the Portuguese manager’s dismissal.

By reinstating Bruno Fernandes in his favoured No.10 role – a move that earned the influential captain the Player of the Year award – and reintroducing Kobbie Mainoo to the first team, Carrick brought both clarity and effectiveness to United’s play.

However, with only the 21-year-old England international Mainoo firmly established in midfield, United’s management are already engaged in discussions to recruit at least two, possibly three, additional midfielders.

The top transfer targets – Elliot Anderson and Aurelien Tchouameni – are viewed as difficult to secure, bordering on unrealistic. As a result, the recruitment team has turned its attention to alternative options.

A £38 million deal for Atalanta’s midfield enforcer Ederson is reportedly in advanced stages, with West Ham’s young talent Mateus Fernandes next on the list. Other players being considered include Sandro Tonali, Carlos Baleba, and Adam Wharton.

Despite this, the club’s transfer budget remains limited, especially since other key areas – goalkeeper, left-back, left-wing, and striker – also require reinforcement. Bringing in three expensive midfielders could stretch resources thin while still leaving Carrick with only a four-man midfield group for one of the most demanding positions on the pitch.

One possible solution, consistent with Manchester United’s long-standing tradition, is to look to the academy — embracing the philosophy that ‘if you’re good enough, you’re old enough’. Sources close to the club suggest that Tyler Fletcher, son of Darren and twin brother of Jack, could be ready to make the leap into the senior team.

Shaun Connolly of Theatre of Red, a journalist well-connected at Old Trafford, reported that the 19-year-old midfielder is “in line for an advanced role with the senior side” next season.

“Internally, Tyler Fletcher continues to impress the coaching team, with many believing he possesses the personality and potential to positively influence the first-team environment. At just 19, the Scottish youngster capped another strong season by winning the 2026 Denzil Haroun Reserve-Team Player of the Year award, reinforcing his status as one of the club’s most promising academy stars.”

Connolly further predicted that if Fletcher maintains his “progress on and off the field,” Manchester United could save as much as £30 million, as his inclusion in Carrick’s rotation would eliminate the need for another midfield signing.

Another 19-year-old prospect, Shea Lacey, is also expected to break into the first team after making a late substitute appearance alongside Fletcher in the 3-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion on the final day of the season.
