Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi has received an official reprimand and one demerit point for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the third ODI against India in Chennai. He accepted the sanction for running on the pitch repeatedly

Hyderabad: Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi has been handed an official reprimand for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the third ODI against India in Chennai on Saturday.

Hashmatullah was found to have breached Article 2.10 of the ICC Code of Conduct for players and player support personnel, which relates to a “batter causing deliberate or avoidable damage to the pitch.”

In addition to this, one demerit point has been added to Hashmatullah’s disciplinary record, for whom it was the first offence in a 24-month period.

After being unofficially warned twice for running on the pitch while batting, Hashmatullah was given an official warning in the 31st over of the Afghanistan innings but still ran down the pitch in the 40th over, which resulted in a five-run penalty for his team.

Hashmatullah admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Ranjan Madugalle of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

On-field umpires Chris Gaffaney and Rohan Pandit, third umpire Richard Illingworth and fourth umpire Virender Sharma levelled the charge.

Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, along with one or two demerit points.
