Marseille have confirmed the appointment of Bruno Genesio as their new head coach, marking yet another managerial change for the French club. The former Lille and Lyon manager takes over at the Stade Velodrome, succeeding Habib Beye, and will now lead a side that includes English forward Mason Greenwood among its key players.

The leadership reshuffle at the Velodrome happened swiftly, with Marseille moving quickly to replace Beye. The ex-Aston Villa defender, who took charge just four months ago, was relieved of his duties after failing to secure qualification for the UEFA Champions League. His short reign ends as the club seeks a more experienced hand to steer them back to the top of French and European football.

Marseille’s expectations are notoriously high, and missing out on a Champions League spot proved costly for Beye. The club’s management decided that a new direction was necessary to ensure they remain competitive domestically and on the continental stage. The decision to part ways with Beye was officially confirmed earlier this week.

By bringing in Genesio, Marseille have turned to a coach with a strong reputation in Ligue 1. The 59-year-old most recently managed Lille, successfully guiding them into the Champions League last season. Known for his tactical intelligence and ability to handle high-pressure environments, Genesio appears well-suited for one of the most demanding coaching roles in French football.

In an official club statement, Marseille expressed full confidence in their new appointment: “This appointment is part of the new sporting cycle undertaken by the club in order to pursue its development and sustainably strengthen its competitiveness at the highest level. With a wealth of experience gained at both domestic and European level, Bruno Genesio has established himself over the years as one of the most highly regarded French coaches.”

Genesio is well-acquainted with the pressures of managing top-tier teams, having previously held positions at Lyon, Rennes, and Beijing Guoan. During his spell at Rennes, he earned the title of French Coach of the Year for the 2021-22 season, underlining his tactical prowess. Now, his challenge will be to revitalise a Marseille squad that ended last season in fifth place in Ligue 1.

Explaining his decision to join the club, Genesio stated: “I chose to join Olympique de Marseille because I was drawn in by the challenge that was presented to me. OM is a unique club, with an exceptional history, a strong identity and supporters whose passion is recognised far beyond its borders.”

The timing of Genesio’s appointment is significant, with Marseille having recently resolved UEFA issues related to financial fair play and break-even targets. With those matters settled, the attention now turns to the pitch as the club prepares for the upcoming Ligue 1 campaign. Marseille will open their season at home against Strasbourg on the weekend of August 21-23, with fans at the Velodrome eager to see an immediate impact from their new boss. Genesio will hope to rely on star forward Mason Greenwood, last season’s top scorer, though the Englishman is reportedly being monitored by Roma and Fenerbahce.
