Despite the turmoil in the Middle East, there is big news of relief for Indian farmers. The government has confirmed that the fertilizer supply chain remains completely safe and smooth. 15 out of 20 ships carrying fertilizers and raw materials for India have successfully crossed the Strait of Hormuz. According to the ministry, these ships include 3.32 lakh tonnes of urea, 2.57 lakh tonnes of DAP and 1.11 lakh tonnes of sulphur, which will soon reach Indian ports.

Supply chain became safe due to diplomatic efforts

Even though the conflict in the Middle East has affected maritime movement, the central government has averted this crisis through better coordination and constant monitoring. The ministry informed that five more ships are in the queue and loading of some others is going on. Due to diplomatic efforts, India has also found new sources of supply, due to which there is no danger of fertilizer shortage in the country.

Arrangements for urea have been made from countries like Oman, Malaysia, Vietnam, Russia and Egypt. At the same time, cargo for DAP and NPK is being procured from countries like Russia, Morocco, America, Saudi Arabia and Jordan through the Red Sea route.

Government with farmers even amidst challenges

Union Minister JP Nadda admitted that the crisis in the global supply chain has affected prices and is causing delays in transport. Despite this, the government has not let it affect the pockets of the farmers. The supply of natural gas, which had fallen by 65% during the crisis, has now been restored 100%, due to which all the urea manufacturing plants are working at full capacity.

Production exceeds target, stock is also full

India has also performed brilliantly on the domestic production front. Urea production in the first quarter of the financial year 2026-27 was 71.55 lakh tonnes, which is much more than the government target (67.86 lakh tonnes). Similarly, production of DAP and NPK also remained above the target. India has already procured 197.56 lakh tonnes of fertilizer against its annual demand (383.9 lakh tonnes), which is more than 51% of the total requirement. As of July 2, the country has a total stock of 163.35 lakh tonnes of fertilizer, which is sufficient for the farmers.
