Metro Train: A new report on Mumbai Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line) has highlighted several major shortcomings. Read the full report to learn about issues such as long staircases, poor last-mile connectivity, and the difficulties faced by passengers.
Metro Train: Mumbai Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line) was envisioned as a major solution to the city's traffic woes. However, a new report has raised serious questions about the line. According to the report, simply accessing this modern metro line—built at a cost of crores of rupees—has become a major challenge for commuters. Thousands of passengers face daily hardships due to long flights of stairs, a lack of escalators for descending at many stations, and inadequate last-mile connectivity upon exiting the stations.
What did the report reveal?
A study by the Moneylife Foundation surveyed the entire 33.5-kilometer corridor and all 27 stations of Mumbai Metro Line 3. The report noted that at many stations, passengers must climb long flights of stairs to reach the platforms or exit the station. While escalators exist at some locations, their numbers are insufficient to meet demand, or they are not conveniently located for passengers. This poses a significant problem, particularly for the elderly, persons with disabilities, and those traveling with small children.
The biggest problem
The report highlights last-mile connectivity as the primary concern. Passengers often struggle to find autos, taxis, or buses outside many stations. In some areas, there are no proper footpaths for pedestrians. Consequently, reaching one's final destination after disembarking from the metro becomes difficult. Unless the metro is effectively integrated with buses, autos, and other forms of public transport, people are unlikely to prioritize the metro over private vehicles.
How are passengers affected?
Commuters who rely on the metro daily for work or other commitments are facing the greatest inconvenience. Climbing up and down long flights of stairs consumes a lot of time and leads to physical fatigue. Many commuters have complained that the time taken just to reach the station and exit it negates the benefits of the Metro's high-speed travel.
What does the Metro management say?
The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation states that continuous efforts are being made to enhance passenger convenience. Initiatives are underway to integrate taxi, bus, and public transport services at various stations. Additionally, plans are being implemented to improve first- and last-mile connectivity.
