Argentina shines in extra time, defeats Switzerland 3-1 and reaches World Cup semi-finals for the second consecutive time

FIFA World Cup: Defending champion Argentina gave a strong performance in the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2026 by defeating Switzerland 3-1 and made it to the semi-finals. The match played at the Kansas City Stadium was full of excitement for the entire 90 minutes, but the decision was taken in extra time. Now Argentina will face England on July 15.

Argentina played aggressively from the beginning of the match. In the 10th minute, Alexis McAllister gave the team an early lead with a brilliant header on a precise pass from Lionel Messi. This was also Argentina’s fastest goal in the current tournament. The score remained the same in the first half, but Switzerland made a comeback in the second half.

In the 67th minute, Dan Ndoye made a brilliant move and scored a goal and leveled the match at 1-1. After this, both the teams created many chances, but no goals could be scored in the stipulated 90 minutes and eight minutes of injury time. In the final moments of injury time, Switzerland goalkeeper Gregor Kobel made a brilliant save to prevent Argentina’s potential winning goal.

The match reached extra time, where Argentina’s experience came in handy. In the 112th minute, Julian Alvarez gave the team the lead again with a brilliant finish. After this, in the 121st minute, Amy Martinez sealed the victory by scoring the third goal.

With this victory, Argentina entered the World Cup semi-finals for the second consecutive time and for the sixth time in total. The team also made another special achievement in its name. They became the first team in World Cup history to score two goals each in the same half of extra time in two different matches in the same tournament. Argentina also maintained the record of scoring a goal in the 15th consecutive match in the World Cup, thus maintaining its excellent rhythm.
