New Delhi: More than 10 projectiles struck Iran’s Qeshm Island on Sunday as renewed hostilities between the United States and Iran raised tensions around the Strait of Hormuz.

“Between 10 to 11 enemy projectiles have struck Qeshm Island since Sunday afternoon,” Qeshm township Governor Hossein Amir Teymouri told Iran’s Islamic Republic News Agency. He said no casualties occurred and “all of the targets were military”.

Qeshm Island lies in the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy supplies.

Fatal strike in Hormozgan

Another attack hit Iran’s southern Hormozgan province. One person died and two others suffered injuries, according to IRNA. The news agency said the strikes targeted Farur in Bandar Lengeh. An employee of the Mobile Communications Company died while “carrying out his duties”, it added.

The renewed fighting followed the collapse of a peace agreement signed last month. The deal sought to end the conflict that began on February 28 and resulted in the death of Iran’s former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The ceasefire collapsed after Iran targeted a merchant vessel as it crossed the Strait of Hormuz.

Rivals dispute control

Iran maintains that its forces control the strait and that no foreign ship can pass “without being identified, tracked, and monitored”. The United States rejects that position and describes the strait as an international waterway.

“The Strait of Hormuz is open to all vessels seeking to lawfully transit the international waterway,” the US Central Command said on X.

“U.S. forces are positioned and prepared to ensure that freedom of navigation remains available despite unwarranted Iranian aggression, harassment, threats, and arbitrary declarations. Iran does not control the strait. Traffic is flowing.”

Regional attacks widen

CENTCOM has attacked several Iranian military and drone facilities in the region. Iran responded with strikes on US bases in Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. Gulf countries condemned the Iranian attacks.

US President Donald Trump said Washington and Tehran had agreed to resume talks. However, he also declared that the ceasefire was “over”.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, meanwhile, vowed to avenge the killing of his father and predecessor. He said Iran had prepared a list of people it planned to target.
