This potential transfer would represent a return to familiar territory for the 32-year-old defender, who previously represented Paris Saint-Germain between 2013 and 2016.

Lucas Digne’s reputation has grown significantly in recent years, especially following his vital contributions to France’s triumphant 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in North America.

He featured for the entire 90 minutes in Les Bleus’ 2-0 quarter-final victory over Morocco, playing a key role in helping the team secure a place in the semi-finals against Spain.

Paris Saint-Germain view Digne as an excellent option to bolster their defensive resources, and the release clause in his current Aston Villa contract provides them with the opportunity to avoid lengthy club-to-club negotiations.

The French club’s interest in the experienced left-back adds another layer of complexity to what is already shaping up to be a difficult summer transfer window for Aston Villa.

The Midlands-based side are currently working hard to retain several of their key first-team players, having already resisted Arsenal’s approach for Morgan Rogers and turned down undervalued bids for goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.

Additionally, a long-term knee injury to midfielder Amadou Onana has forced Villa to seek reinforcements, with Johan Manzambi emerging as a possible target as they prepare for the expected departure of Youri Tielemans to Manchester United.

Losing a reliable and seasoned full-back like Digne through the sudden triggering of his release clause would further disrupt Villa’s plans for the upcoming season.

However, with Digne currently fully engaged in international commitments, any final decision on his future is unlikely until France’s World Cup journey reaches its conclusion.
