If you are thinking of arranging with TTE for a vacant berth while traveling in trains, then be careful. Calcutta High Court has made a very strict comment saying that some TTEs of Railways are openly selling vacant berths in trains like a ‘vegetable market’. The court has ordered the General Managers of all the zones of the Railways to take strictest punitive action against such corrupt employees.
Crimes increase due to negligence
Seeing the seriousness of the matter, the division bench of Justice Rajashekhar Mantha and Justice Biswaroop Choudhary said that due to this arbitrariness and corruption of TTE, horrific incidents like robbery by feeding intoxicants to passengers in trains take place. The court expressed concern that many such crimes do not even come on record and their root cause is the wrong conduct of the TTE. The court said that the consequences of these incidents are often very serious and life-threatening.
What was that dreadful case of 2009?
This entire matter is of February 2009. Two passengers had boarded the Teesta-Torsa Express (New Jalpaiguri to Sealdah) without reservation. The allegation was that he bribed the TTE and got the berth in return. Later, two criminals drugged them and robbed them. One passenger lost his life in the incident, while the other somehow survived after battling death in the hospital for nine days. The High Court also raised questions on the investigation of this case, because the police had not even obtained the forensic report of the viscera, which is a big mistake.
The culprits got relief, but the sword will fall on TTE
The court said that the prosecution failed to prove the charge of murder, due to which the murder conviction of the convicts was quashed. However, the offense of causing harm by administering intoxicants was retained. Both the accused have already served 10 and 16 years of imprisonment and are currently out on bail, with the court directing them to remain released on bond for six months. Now after this strong comment of the court, it is expected that the Railway Administration will take some big steps to curb the arbitrariness of TTE.
