Puri: At least one person died and over 120 others were hospitalised in a stampede like situation during the Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra in Puri, Odisha on Thursday. Soon after the incident, the incident launched the relief and rescue operations, after which the situation was brought under control.
As per officials, lakhs of devotees gathering at the temple complex Thursday morning to catch the glimpse of the deities—Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra, during the traditional ‘Pahandi’ ritual. This led to a sudden chaotic situation leading to pushing and shoving among those present there This lead to suffocation among the people , several of whom collapsed after losing consciousness.
Sharing further details, the health department said that most of the people who ave been hospitalised suffered from suffocation, dehydration, and the physical strain cdue to the overcrowding . While many devotees have been discharged from the hospital, those are relatively serious are undergoing undergo treatment in the hospital. After receiving the information, the police, medical units and disaster management teamsreached the spot and started rescue operations .
After the incident, authorities have increased the deployment of state police, ODRF, NDRF, fire service personnel, and medical teams in the temple complex and nearby areas. At the same time, devotees were urged to use only designated routes, and also maintain patience in crowded areas. Devotees have also been asked to follow the instructions of security personnel to prevent any kind of untoward incidents.
